Donaldson timber announces another year of strong performance

Donaldson timber announces another year of strong performance

Fife-based timber specialist, James Donaldson & Sons Ltd has announced its end of year results.  Turnover for the year ending 31st March 2017 increased from £127m to £137m and pre tax profit increased by almost 31[%] to £7.8m.

Non-Executive Chairman, Neil Donaldson commented, “The business has recorded another year of stellar growth and, alongside a difficult but positive market for house building and construction, we are pleased to see our market share continuing to grow.”

Scott Cairns (Group Managing Director) said, “This is our fourth successive year of strong growth and a testament to an incredibly talented workforce and record levels of investment since we emerged from the downturn.

Early negative market reactions to the Brexit vote of June 2016 quickly passed and all sectors and all of our businesses performed well in the year, cumulating in our strongest year of our 157 year history,

One stark result from the June 2016 vote was the immediate weakness in sterling which continues today.  Raw material prices have increased sharply as a result and we and our clients alike are having to deal with these new cost realities.

During the year we acquired Nu-Style Products Ltd in Aberdeen which has been an excellent enhancement to our Group.

This year has started positively, however, there is no doubt that the General Election result and political machinations generally relating to Brexit, partisan politics or the omnipresent Scottish Independence question have and continue to dent consumer and business confidence and we can see early economic warning signs in our market as a result.

The Group today face those challenges from a position of strength and, macro factors aside, we remain committed to our clients and to being their supplier of choice.”

James Donaldson & Sons Ltd incorporates James Donaldson Timber Ltd, Donaldson Timber Engineering Ltd, MGM Timber (Scotland) Ltd, James Donaldson Insulation Ltd and Nu-Style (Products) Ltd and operates from 28 sites across the UK.

DONALDSON TIMBER RAISES PROFIT TO £4.52M

Fife-based timber specialist, James Donaldson & Sons Ltd has announced its end of year results. Turnover for the year to March 2015 increased by 13[%] to £133M and, whilst margins remained under pressure, efficiency improvements and strong selling throughout the Group helped to post a pre tax profit of £4.52M, 81[%] up on the previous year.

Executive Chairman of the Donaldson Group, Mr Neil Donaldson comments:

“Activity generally within our sector is encouraging.  Our reputation remains strong and prospects for continued growth are positive.”

Commenting on the trading operations for the year, Managing Director of the Donaldson Group, Scott Cairns said:

“Whilst our market sector is still not back to pre downturn levels, all of our Group businesses have successfully grown market share to produce results in excess of any in our 155 year history.  RMi, house building and construction continue to strengthen UK wide and with recent political uncertainties behind us, we now have a Government set on promoting UK house building back to 2007-8 levels of 200,000+ units per annum.

We have invested heavily in the business in recent years, but 2015 will see significant projects completing that will further enhance our productivity and market penetration.

It is an exciting time for the business and our employees alike.  The Group companies continue to make progress in the current year with good growth throughout the UK.”

DONALDSON TIMBER RAISES PROFIT TO £2.2M

Fife-based timber specialist, James Donaldson & Sons Ltd has announced its end of year results. Turnover for the year to March 2013 remained static at £105m but an improvement in margin and efficiency gains helped increase profit before tax by 8.4 percent to £2.2m.

Executive Chairman of the Donaldson Group, Mr Neil Donaldson comments:

“To raise profitability by 8.4 percent in challenging market conditions is a particularly commendable achievement. Our borrowings remain low and we have managed to grow net assets to £18m.

In addition, we have further strengthened our service offering by investing £1.2m in new machinery at our Chorley sawmill site and continue to look for opportunities in the market to help expand our product range.”

Commenting on the trading operations for the year, Managing Director of the Donaldson Group, Scott Cairns said:

“Our business made considerable progress during the year despite a combination of low housing starts and poor general construction activity. All core trading companies within the Donaldson Group have grown market share in the year.  In particular, MGM Timber Scotland Ltd and Donaldson Timber Engineering Ltd exceeded expectations and produced market leading performances, a magnificent accomplishment.

James Donaldson Timber Ltd produced a strong result out of its Scottish site in Leven, Fife whilst the £1.2m investment in new machinery at our Chorley sawmill site in England will significantly improve capacity and production efficiency in the year ahead.

POSI-TIVE AMBITIONS

Donaldson Timber Engineering has just installed the latest engineered joist press at their manufacturing site in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.  The Posi-Joist Revolution Press is only the third press of its type to be installed in the UK.  Both existing presses are installed in timber frame kit manufacturers, so this is a UK first for an engineered joist and roof truss specialist.  The beauty of the machine is that it can produce up to five times the volume of metal web, otherwise known as open web, joists than a traditional press.

Managing Director, Jonathan Fellingham, commented that "the press will give us efficiencies that will allow us to offer Posi-joists at competitive rates on a longer term basis.  This should make Posi-joists an attractive alternative to I-joists for builders and contractors, particularly in longer span applications and where there are intensive electrical, ventilation and plumbing service requirements."

DONALDSON’S CONTINUES TO PERFORM WELL AS TURNOVER EXCEEDS £100M

Fife-based timber specialist, James Donaldson & Sons Ltd has announced its end of year results, with turnover exceeding £100m for the first time in its 152 year history.

Turnover for the year to March 2012 reached £105.3m, which represents an 8.2 percent increase on the previous year.  The Group achieved a profit before tax of £2.033m; slightly up on last year’s figures.

Executive Chairman of the Donaldson Group, Mr Neil Donaldson comments:

“It is particularly pleasing to report that we have broken through the £100m turnover barrier.  Excellent cash flow management has reduced our net debt to just £2m, which equates to a record low gearing ratio for the Group, of 12 percent.  This was a very solid performance given the difficult trading conditions and margin limitations experienced throughout the entire Group.”

Commenting on the trading operations for the year, Managing Director of the Donaldson Group, Scott Cairns said:

“In terms of trading, in a flat market, our overall performance is a credible achievement.  All four trading companies within the Donaldson Group remain profitable and have grown market share in the year.  In particular, MGM Timber Scotland Ltd and Donaldson Timber Engineering Ltd returned market leading performances, a magnificent accomplishment.

James Donaldson Timber Ltd produced a strong result out of its Scottish site in Leven, Fife whilst the current substantial programme of capital investment at its English Brinscall site bodes well for future performance.

Parker Kislingbury increased both sales and market presence in the year with expansion into the North West of England.

DONALDSONS ENVIRONMENTAL INTERN WINS NATIONAL PRIZE

DONALDSONS ENVIRONMENTAL INTERN WINS NATIONAL PRIZE

There were celebrations at James Donaldson Timber Ltd (JDT) last week as student placement Charlotte Owen won first prize at an award ceremony in Edinburgh.

Charlotte has been working with JDT for the past two months through the Bright Green Placement scheme, looking into the energy usage and carbon emissions of the business. The placement is run across Scotland by The Business Partnership Ltd, and culminates in an award ceremony to honour the most enterprising student.

After competing against 12 students for the regional awards in August, Charlotte made it into the national final at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on 6 September along with six other students from across Scotland. Following a presentation and exhibition to a panel of judges, Charlotte was awarded with ‘Most Enterprising Environmental Student 2011’ by Stewart Stevenson, MSP, Minister for the Environment and Climate Change.

During her placement, Charlotte’s objective was to reduce the company’s energy consumption and carbon emissions, predominantly through developing a monitoring and targeting system to highlight the peaks and troughs of energy usage. Through her investigations, Charlotte identified that she could save the company 20[ ]][%]] on electricity bills, reduce paper waste by 4.5 tonnes and reduce its carbon emissions by 210 tonnes per year.

Charlotte explains:

“It was my intention that with an effective monitoring system, well researched recommendations and a voluntary ‘Green Team’, the company could make positive changes that would be welcomed and supported by its employees well into the future.

“I was absolutely delighted to win the national final of the Environmental Placement Programme. This has been one of the most learning intensive and valuable experiences of my life. Before my placement I had the passion and interest for sustainability and energy reduction as well as the skills to think analytically and problem solve. My placement has since given me the technical knowledge to carry out energy and carbon monitoring and assess the feasibility of a number of engineering and technical measures to reduce energy consumption. I’ve learnt a lot; I feel like I’ve had a positive impact on the company, and I’ve also had a great time.”

Donaldson’s Integrated Systems Manager, Mark Murphy comments:

”Charlotte far exceeded what was expected of her in her role, and has been a real asset to the company over the last two months. We’re extremely pleased and proud that she won the national award, and that her hard work has been recognised.

“As a company dedicated to managing the impact we have on the environment, we are always looking for new ways to perform our business in a more environmentally-responsible manner. I will be taking over Charlotte’s report and will ensure that where possible the company follows her recommendations. We wish her all the best in her future role.”

Since starting her placement, Charlotte has been offered a job with Kent County Council Highway Transportation Graduate Stream, where she will be planning new infrastructure developments, public transport and non-vehicular modes of transport.

DONALDSON’S PERFORMS WELL AS TURNOVER NEARS £100M

DONALDSON’S PERFORMS WELL AS TURNOVER NEARS £100M

James Donaldson & Sons Ltd has announced its end of year results, with turnover up by 20[%] to almost £100M.

Turnover for the year to March 2011 reached £97.3m, with the company achieving a profit before tax of £2.018m; up 228[%] from last year’s figures.

Excellent cash flow management has also reduced net debt to just £1.25M, which equates to a record low gearing ratio for the Group, of just 18[%].

Executive Chairman of the Donaldson Group, Mr Neil Donaldson comments:

“It is very pleasing to report that our turnover almost made the £100M mark, and we’re delighted to have performed so well when trading conditions remain incredibly challenging. 2010/11 was a huge year for us, as we celebrated many milestones within the company - notably our 150th anniversary and the appointment of Scott Cairns as Managing Director.”

Commenting on the trading operations for the year, Managing Director of the Donaldson Group, Scott Cairns said:

“2010/11 was truly a year of ‘two halves’ in terms of market activity. April to September saw trade reach its strongest level for several years; however, October to February was among the hardest trading months I can recall. Nevertheless, March 2011 saw a positive seasonal swing, and it was welcoming to see all of the subsidiary businesses finishing off the year on a high note.”

All four subsidiary companies within the Donaldson Group outperformed from last year. Hardwood specialist Parker Kislingbury Ltd delivered a strong performance with a modest rise in sales; engineered wood products manufacturer Donaldson Timber Engineering Ltd saw a return to profitability following two years of losses, and both timber merchant MGM Timber (Scotland) Ltd and timber importer and processor James Donaldson Timber Ltd returned record sales and strong profitability.
